Baseball: Pepperdine Set to Host 2013 Scolinos Alumni Game and Award Dinner February 9

MALIBU, Calif.- The Pepperdine baseball program is set to host the 2013 John Scolinos Alumni Game and Award Dinner on Saturday, Feb. 9 at Eddy D. Field Stadium. The game will begin at 1:00 p.m. with the award presentation and dinner set for a 6:00 p.m. start at the North Ranch Country Club.
Current Milwaukee Brewer All-Star and the 2011 National League MVP Ryan Braun will be the guest speaker at the event. The silent auction will begin at 4:45 p.m.
The John Scolinos Alumni Game is held annually before the start of the Pepperdine baseball season and gives Pepperdine baseball alumni the chance to reconnect and remember what it was like to play in a Waves uniform. The Pepperdine baseball alumni will face off against the current Waves baseball squad. The game is played in honor of Pepperdine coaching legend, John Scolinos.
Following the game, the Pepperdine baseball program will host a dinner and ceremony, during which the 2013 John Scolinos Award winner will be named. Given annually since 2005, the John Scolinos Award recognizes one Pepperdine Baseball student-athlete for his exemplary behavior during a season or career. The recipient will be honored for demonstrating strong character traits, including humility, resourcefulness, loyalty, honesty, work ethic, Christian behavior and sportsmanship.
All of these attributes contribute to outstanding performance and dedicated efforts both on and off the baseball diamond. Previous award recipients were Cory Brightwell (2005), Steve Kleen (2006), Paul Coleman (2007), Barry Enright (2008), Brett Hunter (2009), Nick Gaudi (2010), Ryan Heroy (2011) and Trent Diedrich(2012).
ADMISSION: Admission to the John Scolinos Alumni Game is free and the public is welcome. The cost for the dinner is $65 per person. ABOUT JOHN SCOLINOS: John Scolinos coached the Waves' football and baseball teams for 15 seasons from 1946-1960, compiling a 260-209 overall record on the diamond, highlighted by three trips to the NCAA District Playoffs (1955, 57, 60). Scolinos, who has the longest tenure of any head coach in the history of the Pepperdine baseball program, also ranks third in total wins all-time in Pepperdine history. In 1980, Scolinos was inducted into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame. After leaving Pepperdine, he coached at Cal Poly Pomona for 30 seasons.
