MALIBU, Calif. - After leading the Waves to a record of 3-1 last week, complete with a sweep of West Coast Conference foe BYU, second baseman Joe Sever was named WCC Rawlings Player of the Week for the second time this season.
Sever (San Jose, Calif./Bellarmine College Prep) batted an impressive .500 (8-for-16) with six RBIs and four runs scored over the week. He played a key role for the Waves in the series against BYU, collecting the game-winning RBIs in both Thursday's and Friday's come-from-behind victories.
In the bottom of the 11th with the bases loaded on Thursday, Sever worked back from an 0-2 count and was hit by the pitch to push across the game winning run in the Waves' 4-3 win. On Friday, Sever was 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs, two of which came on a two-out single in the bottom of the 8th inning that give the Waves a 7-5 lead that they never relinquished. They eventually added two more to take game two 9-5. In game three on Sunday, Sever was 1-2 with a sac fly and an RBI ground out to score two runs as the Waves orchestrated their third come-from-behind victory of the weekend to sweep the Cougars.
The honor is the second weekly award for Sever in both his career and this season. His previous honor came the week of April 16. He currently leads the Waves with a .385 batting average and 45 RBIs on the year. The junior also leads the WCC with a .486 batting average in WCC contests.
Sever and the Waves return to action on Tuesday as they travel to Long Beach State to take on the Dirtbags in their final nonconference midweek game of the season. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. PT at Blair Field.
