Corbin Moore scored 13 of his game-high 17 points during an excellent second-half comeback, but #24 Gonzaga pulled away in the end to earn a 72-60 victory over the Pepperdine men's basketball team on Saturday in West Coast Conference play.
The Waves (8-15, 2-10) trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half and 35-21 at halftime before closing the gap to two points on two occasions in the second half, last at 50-48 with less than nine minutes to play.
Moore (Cypress, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) also pulled down 10 rebounds (eight in the second half) to record his sixth double-double of the season. Junior guard Joshua Lowery (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS) contributed 11 points and seven assists.
After shooting 30.8% in the first half, the Waves hit on 53.6% of their shots in the second half to finish at 42.6% for the game. Gonzaga (18-4, 8-2) hit half (22-for-44) of its shots.
Down 44-30 with more than 15 minutes to play, sophomore guard Nikolas Skouen (Bergen, Norway/Pratt CC) began a 12-0 Pepperdine run with a pair of three-pointers, along with Lowery sinking a long-distance shot of his own, that cut Gonzaga's lead to 44-42 with 12 1/2 minutes left. It was a two-point game again at 50-48 with 8:55 left after a lay-up by freshman forward Manny Ochenje (Abuja, Nigeria/Brehm Prep).
But the Bulldogs righted themselves, going on a 10-0 run over the next four-plus minutes. Gonzaga got the lead up to 60-48 before senior forward Taylor Darby (San Marcos, Calif./Mission Hills HS) scored a basket with 3:59 to go. The Waves go no closer than eight points the rest of the way.
The Bulldogs had a big edge in free throws, going 21-for-28 to the Waves' 6-for-12. Though Pepperdine committed only 10 turnovers, Gonzaga had a 9-2 advantage in points off turnovers. And while the Waves outrebounded the Bulldogs, 33-30 (and had a 12-7 edge in offensive rebounds), the visitors outscored Pepperdine 11-5 in second-chance points.
Robert Sacre and Kevin Pangos scored 15 points apiece for the Bulldogs.
