Step Forward Day Recap: Men's Basketball
The men's basketball team worked at SHARE! in downtown Los Angeles.
MALIBU, California -- The 29th annual Step Forward Day was celebrated at Pepperdine on Saturday (Sept. 9), and the Waves' athletic teams were out in full force serving the community.
Thousands of students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends, as well as dozens of campus organizations, including classes, dorms, fraternities, sororities, and clubs, came together to assist nonprofit organizations, schools, churches and parks throughout Southern California.
Step Forward Day began in 1988 when two Pepperdine students recognized the need for volunteers in the local community and sought to encourage service among their peers. The projects began as small acts of service from helping to repair homes of local senior citizens to planting gardens at Webster Elementary School. Today the annual event has grown not only across Southern California, but also to communities nationwide as Pepperdine alumni step forward to help.
The men's basketball team helped at an organization called SHARE! in downtown Los Angeles. Student-athlete Nolan Taylor gives us this account:
Starting at 6:45 a.m., the Pepperdine men's basketball team began Step Forward Day. We went to a place called SHARE!. It is located in downtown Los Angeles and this place is an accessible and supportive center where a large community of self-help groups meet each week, addressing all kinds of issues such as anger management, health, depression, self-esteem, relationships, childhood abuse, substance abuse, porn addiction and many more.
The team was tasked with reorganizing and cleaning two different warehouses full of different heavy furniture items. We also were putting doorknobs on doors, and some of the guys were able to show their artistic abilities and paint different signs and pictures with encouraging messages as the theme.
Step Forward Day was an empowering and impactful experience. It was a great feeling to step aside from being a basketball player and to solely embrace service for other people. We have so many people who assist us in being student-athletes, and to be able to step into the perspective of the people at SHARE! was something I will never forget. Step Forward Day reminded me that people that help, need help as well. The team had an enjoyable experience and a sense of gratification knowing that joining hands as one can make a difference within society by doing community service!
