MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine men's basketball program has many former players still active professionally, highlighted by Mychel Thompson, who's currently in the New York Knicks preseason training camp.
Thompson was in the starting lineup for the Knicks' exhibition opener against Washington on October 11 alongside the likes of Carmelo Anthony, Tyson Chandler and Raymond Felton. Thompson played 15 minutes and had two points and four rebounds. In the Knicks' second game against Boston on October 13, Thompson came off the bench to play 20 minutes and had four points, six rebounds and two assists. The Knicks have four more exhibitions before their season opener on November 1.
Thompson made his NBA debut with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2011-12, appearing in five games early in the lockout-shortened season before being waived.
Thompson was a four-year standout for the Waves (2008-11), playing in a record 128 games and finishing 14th on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,413 points. He was a two-time All-West Coast Conference honorable mention selection.
The most recent Wave to join the pros was Taylor Darby. A 2012 graduate who was the team's leading scorer last season, Darby was originally headed to play in Uruguay but instead ended up in Israel, where he's now playing for Hapoel Yokneam/Megido.
After playing in the 2012 Olympics for France, Yakhouba Diawara has gone back to Italy, where he's played the past couple of seasons. He's playing for Umana VE in 2012-13. Diawara played four seasons in the NBA with the Denver Nuggets and Miami Heat.
Another NBA veteran, Alex Acker, is also in Europe, having recently signed with Asseco Prokom Gdynia in Poland. Acker played with the Detroit Pistons and Los Angeles Clippers before spending time with teams in Italy and France.
Another recent graduate, Jonathan Dupre', signed his first professional contract with Miercurea Ciuc in Romania.
A few other Waves with their most recent teams (according to EuroBasket): Denis Agre (Levski Sofia in Bulgaria), Chase Griffin (Gotha in Germany), Glen McGowan (Capitanes in the Dominican Republic), Rico Tucker (Lan Mobel Iraurgi Saski Baloia in Spain) and Robert Turner (Arizona Scorpions of the ABA).
Pepperdine's teams have their home exhibitions on Tuesday, October 30 (women vs. Westmont) and Saturday, November 3 (men vs. Cal Lutheran). Their official home openers are Monday, November 12 (women vs. UC Riverside) and Friday, November 16 (men vs. Washington State). All home games are webstreamed for free at www.pepperdinesports.com.
