Men's Golf Posts Impressive Second Place in Arizona
Sahith Theegala, Clay Feagler and Robbie Geibel all posted top 10 finishes.
TUCSON, Arizona – The Pepperdine men’s golf team pulled off an impressive second-place finish at the Arizona Intercollegiate, the first tournament of the spring season, while three Waves wound up in the top 10 on Tuesday.
The Waves shot a two-day total of 869 (294-296-279) at the par-71 Sewailo Golf Club and finished only behind #20 Oregon’s 857. Pepperdine finished better than six top-50 teams, including #8 Texas A&M, and beat five Pac-12 schools (Washington, California, #39 UCLA, Arizona and Washington State) and two West Coast Conference foes (#44 BYU and Gonzaga).
The Waves were in third place after both the first and second round but moved up a spot thanks to a 5-under 279 in the final round.
Sophomore Sahith Theegala (Chino Hills, Calif./Diamond Bar HS) picked up where he left off in the fall and led the Waves with a fifth-place finish. Freshman Clay Feagler (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) was right behind in a tie for sixth place and senior Robbie Geibel (Pembroke Pines, Fla./American Heritage HS/Louisville) tied for ninth.
With a 2-under 69 in the final round, Theegala continued a streak that has seen him post at least one below-par round in every single one of his 17 college tournaments that he’s completed. He finished with a 1-over 214 (71-74-69) and was five strokes back of the medalist. His 13 birdies were tied for second-most in the tournament, with four of them coming in the final round.
Feagler, playing his fourth college tournament, posted his first-ever top-10 or top-20 finish. He had a 2-over 215 (71-76-68). His 3-under 68 in the final round was also a college best and included five of his 10 birdies.
Geibel had a season-best finish as part of the lineup and shot a 4-over 217 (73-72-72). He had seven birdies in all and an eagle on the par-5 8th hole during the second round.
Freshman Joshua McCarthy (Danville, Calif./De La Salle HS) tied for 49th at 228 (82-76-70) and sophomore Roy Cootes (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) tied for 60th at 231 (79-74-78). McCarthy had three birdies during his final-round of a 1-under 70.
Pepperdine is next in action at The Prestige at PGA West in La Quinta, California, from February 20-22.
