Jeremy Sanders earned a top-20 finish with the help of a final-round 2-under 69 and the Pepperdine men's golf team took ninth place at the Arizona Intercollegiate, the first tournament of the spring season, on Tuesday.
The Waves were in ninth after the first round but fell to 11th when the second round, which had been halted due to darkness on Monday, was completed first thing this morning. Pepperdine regained ground thanks to a final-round 2-over 286 that gave the Waves a total of 884 (297-301-286) at the par-71 Golf Club of Vistoso. The 286 tied for the fourth-lowest score of the final round.
Sanders (Chatsworth, Calif./New Community Jewish HS/Univ. of Redlands) shot 74-73-69 for a total of a 3-over 216, good for a tie for 18th place. He moved up 14 spots over the course of the final round and posted a season-best finish. Sanders had four birdies during a seven-hole stretch during the final round. He had a total of nine birdies over the two days as well as an eagle on the par-5 second hole during his second round.
Pepperdine Coach Michael Beard, who was hired in December, felt good after his first tournament in charge.
"Being a new coach, it's an adjustment for the players," he said. "We tried to let them play their game and be free, and be confident in their decisions, and they got that in the last round. They were a little tentative the first day and part of the second day, but the last round they played with some freedom and made quite a few birdies.
"I'm encouraged for the next tournament. It's different than when you're practicing or qualifying at home, you really get to see what guys are made of at tournaments. I have a better idea of what our team looks like. We've definitely got some competitors."
Sophomore Kevin DeHuff (Coto de Caza, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic HS) tied for 36th place at 221 (73-75-73), junior Parker Page (Louisville, Ky./Ballard HS) tied for 45th at 223 (72-76-75), senior Johnny Mac Arthur (Newhall, Calif./Hart HS) tied for 57th at 226 (78-77-71) and freshman Frederick Wedel (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) tied for 80th at 235 (78-84-73).
Total birdie counts for the three rounds were Page with 10, DeHuff with nine, Mac Arthur with eight and Wedel with three.
The Waves will be back in action at The Prestige at PGA West, held in La Quinta, Calif., from Feb. 18-20.
