LA QUINTA, California – The best round of the day lifted the Pepperdine men’s golf team to an impressive second-place finish at The Prestige at PGA West on Wednesday, which included four head-to-head wins over teams ranked in the top 15 in the country.

Pepperdine started the day in a tie for seventh place but moved up the final leaderboard at the par-71 Greg Norman Course at PGA West thanks to a 5-under 279. The Waves were only one of three teams to record an under-par team score on the day, and the 279 was the second-best round of the entire tournament.

#16 LSU won the tournament with a three-day total of 852, while the Waves were four shots back with a 4-over 856 (281-296-279). Among the teams the Waves beat were #5 Texas Tech, #8 Stanford, #11 Oklahoma, #14 San Diego State and #27 Arizona State. Pepperdine also far outpaced West Coast Conference rivals Saint Mary’s and San Diego.

The Waves have now posted two consecutive second-place finishes to start the spring 2017 semester.

Freshman Clay Feagler (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) posted his second straight top-10 finish with a tie for sixth place with a 3-under 210 (71-71-68). His final round included five birdies.

Two more Waves were in the top 20 as sophomore Sahith Theegala (Chino Hills, Calif./Diamond Bar HS) and freshman Joshua McCarthy (Danville, Calif./De La Salle HS) both tied for 18th with 1-over 214s. Theegala’s 2-under 69 included five birdies. It was the seventh consecutive day of competition for Theegala, who tied for 49th place at the PGA Tour’s Genesis Open over the weekend. Theegala has finished in the top 20 in all seven tournaments this season. McCarthy had five birdies during his even-par 71 on Wednesday, and he had a team-best 12 for the tournament.

Sophomore Roy Cootes (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) tied for 32nd at 220 (73-76-71). He had five birdies, all in a six-hole span, on Wednesday. Senior Robbie Geibel (Pembroke Pines, Fla./American Heritage HS/Louisville) tied for 61st at 227 (71-79-77).

Playing as an individual, junior Anthony Cecere (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./St. Margaret’s Episcopal School) tied for 47th place at 223 (71-78-74).

The Waves next play in their own tournament, the Southwestern Invitational at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, next Monday and Tuesday (February 27-28).
