Waves Off to Great Start at Own North Ranch Intercollegiate

Pepperdine shot a 292-284, good for a total of a 6-over 574, which is tied with West Coast Conference rival Brigham Young. Another strong showing during Tuesday's third and final round at the par-71 North Ranch Country Club will give the Waves their best finish of the 2012-13 season. Liberty, in fourth place, is six strokes behind Pepperdine and BYU.
Only USC had a better round on Monday than the Waves' afternoon score of a 2-under 282. The Trojans shot 285-279, giving them a total of a 4-under 564.
The Trojans' Sam Smith shot an opening 6-under 65 and leads the individual race with a 6-under 136. He's two shots in front of teammate Yi Keun Chang and five ahead of BYU's Zachary Blair.
Freshman Frederick Wedel (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) had the best day for Pepperdine, as he's tied for fourth place with an even-par 142 (74-68). His second round included an eagle on the par-5 12th hole and five birdies.
Junior Jeremy Sanders (Chatsworth, Calif./New Community Jewish HS/Univ. of Redlands) isn't far back, as he's tied for 10th place with a 2-over 144 (73-71).
Others in the lineup for Pepperdine include freshman Cody McManus (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS), tied for 23rd at 147 (72-75); sophomore Kevin DeHuff (Coto de Caza, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic HS), tied for 27th at 148 (80-68); and junior Parker Page (Louisville, Ky./Ballard HS), tied for 30th at 149 (73-76). On the day, McManus led the Waves with 26 pars, while De Huff led the squad with seven birdies.
The Waves also have four players competing as individuals. Sophomore Andrew Morris (Cape Town, South Africa/Rondebosch Boys HS) is tied for 33rd at 150 (77-73), redshirt freshman Nick Thomas (Westlake Village, Calif./Chaminade College Prep/California) is tied for 36th at 151 (78-73), freshman Cameron Davison (Duncan, B.C./Duncan Christian HS) is tied for 48th at 154 (76-78) and sophomore Caston Roberts (Gilbert, Ariz./Gibert Christian HS) is tied for 56th at 157 (80-77).
A total of five Waves eagled the par-5 12th hole on Monday. Davison did it in the first round and Wedel, Sanders, DeHuff and Morris did it in the second.
Barring a frost delay, teams will begin play at the #1 and #10 tees at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The Waves, Trojans and Cougars will tee off #1 beginning at 8:30 a.m.
