TEMPE, Ariz. - Cody McManus had the best round of the day among Pepperdine's men's golfers on Saturday at the Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational -- a career-best 3-under 68 -- but unfortunately the freshman is playing as an individual and his score didn't count as the Waves dropped to 11th place after two rounds.
Pepperdine, which was sixth after the first round, is at 580 (287-293) at the par-71 Karsten Golf Course. The Waves are just six strokes out of seventh place. The third and final round is on Sunday.
McManus (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS) moved all the way up from a tie for 51st place to a tie for 17th place with an even-par 142 (74-68). His day began with birdies on three of his first five holes, and he had a total of four during the round.
Tied with McManus in 17th place is junior Parker Page (Louisville, Ky./Ballard HS), who has shot 69-73 for his total of 142. He had one birdie and 14 pars during the second round.
Freshman Frederick Wedel (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) is tied for 35th place at 144 (70-74). The rest of the Waves are tied for 68th place at 150. Sophomore Kevin DeHuff (Coto de Caza, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic HS) has shot 79-71, junior Jeremy Sanders (Chatsworth, Calif./New Community Jewish HS/Redlands) is 73-77 and redshirt freshman Nick Thomas (Westlake Village, Calif./Chaminade College Prep/California) is 75-75.
DeHuff had a total of six birdies during his even-par round on Saturday. Thomas and Wedel had three birdies apiece.
