SANTA CRUZ, California – Freshman Joshua McCarthy posted a season-best tie for second place at the Western Intercollegiate, helping boost the Pepperdine men's golf team to a strong fourth-place finish on Sunday.

The Waves were tied for sixth after the first round and tied for seventh after the second, which was completed on Sunday morning before the third round could begin. A 3-over 353 was the best third round by any team in the field, moving the Waves up three spots in the final standings.

#29 Pepperdine finished with a two-day total of 1,078 strokes (361-364-353) at the play-six, count-five event being held at the par-70 Pasatiempo Golf Club. The Waves only finished behind three top-10 teams in #1 USC, #7 Stanford and #9 Oregon, and posted victories over the likes of #17 Texas, #25 Arizona State, #32 San Diego State and #33 Washington. McCarthy’s final round saw him at 3-over after 11 holes but he recorded three birdies the rest of the way, including one on his final hole. He had 10 birdies for the tournament.

He had a double-bogey on his first hole of the third round, but was flawless the rest of the day and had three birdies plus an eagle on the par-5 ninth hole.

Freshman Clay Feagler (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) tied for 39th at 219 (72-74-73), senior Robbie Geibel (Pembroke Pines, Fla./American Heritage HS/Louisville) tied for 44th at 220 (73-75-72) and freshman Hunter Epson (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson HS) tied for 74th at 227 (73-77-77).
