MALIBU, Calif. - Senior Josh Anderson of the Pepperdine men's golf team shot an even-par 72 to lead the Pepperdine men's golf team during Monday's first round of the West Coast Conference Championships. The Waves are in a tie for fifth place as a team.

Saint Mary's had an incredible day, shooting a 14-under 274 and taking a 14-stroke lead in the competition. All four of the Gaels' scoring players shot below par. The Waves are tied with Santa Clara at 295.

Play continues with two more rounds on Tuesday and Wednesday at the par-72 San Juan Oaks Golf Club.

"We didn't have any under-par scores to lead us," Pepperdine Coach John Geiberger said. "Everyone shot 72 to 76, and it's hard to jump out with those scores. The conditions were perfect for low scoring today. We can't change our game plan. Everybody's got to go through the process and stay patient, and hope we put some red on the boards, especially if the conditions stay like this. We need three guys in the 60s tomorrow, and we've got players that can do that."

Anderson (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS), a three-time All-WCC first teamer, is in a tie for 10th place. He had an eagle on the par-5 11th hole and three birdies, including one on the 18th that got him back to par.

The rest of the Waves are bunched up on the leaderboard. Junior Johnny Mac Arthur (Newhall, Calif./Hart HS) and sophomore Parker Page (Louisville, Ky./Ballard HS) are tied for 22nd place at 74, freshman Kevin DeHuff (Coto de Caza, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic HS) is in 28th place at 75 and sophomore Alex Forss (Temecula, Calif./Great Oak HS) is tied for 29th place at 76.

Mac Arthur had an eagle on the par-5 ninth hole. Page had a total of four birdies.
