Men's Golf Gets WCC Championships Underway
Pepperdine is seven shots back after the first round.
PROVO, Utah – The Pepperdine men’s golf team shot a 2-under 286 to open up the West Coast Conference Championships but has a little bit of work to do to get back in the team race after Thursday’s first round.
The Waves are tied for third place but are seven shots back of host BYU and three behind Saint Mary’s.
The second round is Friday at the par-72 Riverside Country Club and the third and final round is Saturday. The Waves are paired with Santa Clara and San Diego and they will tee off the first hole beginning at 8:45 a.m. PT on Friday.
Sophomore Sahith Theegala (Chino Hills, Calif./Diamond Bar HS) shot a 2-under 70 to lead the Waves, putting him into a tie for ninth place. He was 1-over at the turn but posted three birdies in his final five holes. He had four birdies on the day.
Sophomore Roy Cootes (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) is tied for 14th place after a 1-under 71. He also played some of his best golf down the stretch, going birdie-eagle-birdie on holes five through seven. He had a total of three birdies and the eagle came on a par-4.
Freshman Clay Feagler (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) is tied for 16th after an even-par 72, senior Robbie Geibel (Pembroke Pines, Fla./American Heritage HS/Louisville) is tied for 21st with a 1-over 73 and freshman Joshua McCarthy (Danville, Calif./De La Salle HS) is tied for 38th with a 76. McCarthy had four birdies, Feagler had three and Geibel had two.
Pepperdine has won more WCC titles (18) than any other school and came into the WCC Championships as the league’s highest ranked team (#22).
