EUGENE, Ore. - Pepperdine sophomore Frederick Wedel began play on Thursday at NCAA Men's Golf Regional being hosted by the University of Oregon. He shot a 79 and is tied for 64th place after the first round.
Wedel (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) earned a spot as an individual at the regional after leading the Waves with a 72.97 stroke average and earning All-West Coast Conference honorable mention honors.
His high point during the round came with consecutive birdies on the 12th and 13th holes, but he also had to contend with four double-bogeys on the day.
Wedel will be back for the second round at the par-72 Eugene Country Club on Friday when he tees off the 10th hole at 9:50 a.m. The third and final round is on Saturday. For Wedel to advance to the NCAA Championships, he would need to be the low-scoring player among the non-qualifying teams and other individuals (the top five teams move on).
