PALO ALTO, Calif. - Both Josh Anderson (3-under and tied for third place) and Johnny Mac Arthur (2-under and tied for seventh place) of the Pepperdine men's golf team had terrific first rounds on Thursday at the NCAA West Regional hosted by Stanford.
In order to move on to the NCAA Championships (May 29-31 at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.), either Anderson or Mac Arthur will need to be the low individual at the regional aside from the players on the five teams that will qualify.
Right now, the qualifying score is at 4-under, held by co-leaders Zachary Blair of BYU and Sang Yi of LSU. Play continues at the par-70 Stanford Golf Course with single rounds on Friday and Saturday.
Anderson (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS), a senior, shot a 3-under 67, but he got off to a tough start with a double-bogey on the third hole and a bogey on the fifth. He quickly righted things with three straight birdies on seven, eight and nine, which got him back to even-par at the turn. On the back nine, he had five pars in a row before posting three consecutive birdies again on the 15th, 16th and 17th holes.
Mac Arthur (Newall, Calif./Hart HS), a junior, is a shot back of Anderson after a 2-under 68. He went birdie-bogey on holes one and two, and again on four and five. Like Anderson, he was flawless the rest of the way and picked up birdies on the eighth and 15th holes.
West Coast Conference rival San Francisco opened up a one-stroke lead in the team competition.
