Jeremy Sanders had a strong start to his senior year on Monday, as he shot a 2-under 142 over the first two rounds of the season-opening Kikkor Husky Invitational, putting him into eighth place.
Sanders (Chatsworth, Calif./New Community Jewish HS/Redlands) and his teammates will be looking for a strong finish when the third and final round is contested on Tuesday at the par-72 Gold Mountain Golf Club's Olympic Course.
The Waves are in 12th place as a team after shooting a 298 and a 296. Pepperdine is one of six West Coast Conference schools in the field, as Gold Mountain will also be the site of the WCC Championships in the spring. The Waves are currently ahead of Gonzaga and Pacific and will try to catch Saint Mary's tomorrow.
Sanders' day began with a triple-bogey on the third hole of his first round, but he was largely flawless the rest of the day and shot 72-70. He had four birdies and one bogey over the remainder of his first round, and then had three birdies and one bogey in the afternoon.
Additionally, sophomore Nick Thomas (Westlake Village, Calif./Chaminade College Prep/California) is tied for 24th place with a 2-over 146 (72-74), senior Parker Page (Louisville, Ky./Ballard HS) is tied for 54th at 152 (77-75), junior Kevin DeHuff (Coto de Caza, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic HS) is tied for 67th at 155 (77-78) and sophomore Frederick Wedel (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) is in 71st at 157 (80-77). Thomas had a total of five birdies during his even-par first round.
Also, freshman Robin Kang (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./South Torrance HS) is making his collegiate debut in an individual tournament running at the same time at Gold Mountain's Cascade Course. He is tied for 13th place with a 3-over 145 (72-73) in that event.
