SIMI VALLEY, Calif. - Frederick Wedel and Nick Thomas wrapped up Cal State Northridge's Bill Cullum Invitational with 1-under 71s on Tuesday, helping the Pepperdine men's golf team to finish in fifth place.
The Waves shot 292-286-293 over the two days for a total of a 7-over 871 at the par-72 Wood Ranch Golf Club. Cal State Fullerton (-15), San Diego (-14) and Arizona State (-12) finished 1-2-3 and UC Santa Barbara (+5) edged out Pepperdine for fourth place.
"We showed some good signs, that's for sure," Pepperdine Coach Michael Beard said. "It's nice to go to a tournament and finish in the top five, though we wish we could have done a little bit better. As a team we're doing enough well, we're making enough birdies, and we have enough positives. We just need to minimize our mistakes. When we do that, we're going to be very competitive."
Wedel (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS), a sophomore, posted his first top 10 finish of the season and the third of his career. He ended up tied for 10th place with a 2-under 214 (71-72-71). His final round included four birdies.
"It's good to see Fred be under-par for three rounds," Beard said. "His game is really coming into form. He learned some lessons at our first two events. He didn't putt as well as he would have liked, but he thought about the game better and was steady emotionally. He really kept it together and didn't get flustered by a bad shot. He's hitting it well and once his putter warms up we'll keep seeing a lot more of these types of scores from him."
Thomas (Westlake Village, Calif./Chaminade College Prep/California), a sophomore, was in a tie for 91st place after the first round but after two straight below-par rounds, he wound up in a tie for 35th place with a 4-over 220 (79-70-71). Thomas had four birdies on Tuesday, all of which came in an eight-hole stretch.
Senior Jeremy Sanders (Chatsworth, Calif./New Community Jewish HS/Redlands) also tied for 35th place at 220 after shooting 72-72-76. He had three birdies during the final round.
Senior Parker Page (Louisville, Ky./Ballard HS) tied for 60th place at 226 (75-76-75) and junior Kevin DeHuff (Coto de Caza, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic HS) tied for 65th at 227 (74-72-81). Playing as an individual, sophomore Cameron Davison (Duncan, B.C./Duncan Christian HS) was 99th at 238 (84-83-71). Davison's first career below-par round included six birdies.
This was the third of Pepperdine's four fall tournaments. The Waves wrap up this portion of the season at Hawaii's Princeville Intercollegiate on November 4-6.
