MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine men's golf coach John Geiberger announced that Frederick Wedel, a high school standout from The Woodlands, Texas, recently signed a national letter-of-intent and will join the Waves in the fall.
Wedel, who attends The Woodlands High School, is ranked #37 for the Class of 2012 by the AJGA/Polo system and is #93 overall. He's also #107 on the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings.
"I'm excited to have Frederick come to Pepperdine," Geiberger said. "He's a consistent player. He's passionate about the game, is a hard worker and is very driven. He's someone that's definitely going to help us in the future."
He won the District 14-5A Tournament for The Woodlands, and had six under-par rounds this past season, including a 67 and 68. In junior golf tournaments this past year, his scoring average has been 72.8. Wedel has had two top five finishes at AJGA events, including fourth place at the AJGA Elbit Systems of America Junior Championship, and fifth at the AJGA Genesis Regional Championship presented by the Valero Texas Open. He most recently came in ninth at the AJGA Goodman Networks Junior at the Traditions. He came in second at the Texas Junior Golf Tour's Tour Championship at TPC San Antonio.
Said Wedel: "I chose Pepperdine because of the perfect weather, location and past success that the golf program has achieved with Coach Geiberger."
Wedel will be the second NLI signee to join the Waves for 2012-13. Cody McManus (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS) committed during the fall signing period.
