Men's Golf Dominates WCC Postseason Awards
The Waves have their first WCC Player of the Year since 2009.
MALIBU, California – The Pepperdine men’s golf team put a league-best four players on the All-West Coast Conference first team, while Sahith Theegala earned co-Player of the Year honors and Michael Beard picked up his second straight Coach of the Year nod on Tuesday.
Theegala (Chino Hills, Calif./Diamond Bar HS) and fellow sophomore Roy Cootes (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS), plus freshmen Clay Feagler (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) and Joshua McCarthy (Danville, Calif./De La Salle HS), all picked up first team honors.
Theegala is the Waves’ first WCC Player of the Year since Andrew Putnam in 2009. It’s the second straight year for Theegala on the first team, while Cootes was honorable mention last season. This is the seventh time that the Waves have put at as many as four players on the All-WCC first team, and the first time since 2005.
Beard, the Waves’ fifth-year head coach, picked up his second WCC Coach of the Year award. Pepperdine is the highest-ranked team in the conference at #22 in Golfstat, the best the Waves have been this late in a season in more than a decade.
Theegala is the conference’s top-ranked player at #17 in Golfstat. He was named the WCC Freshman of the Year last season. He leads Pepperdine with a 71.03 scoring average and has posted four top-10 and 10 top-20 finishes in 12 tournaments, including a victory at the Southwestern Invitational in February. He also stood out for his tie for 49th place at the PGA Tour’s Genesis Open in February.
Cootes is second on the team with a 72.03 scoring average. He’s had five top-10 and seven top-20 results this season, and most recently led the Waves at the WCC Championships with a tie for seventh place. His best finish has been a tie for third at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate.
Feagler has recorded a 72.60 scoring average. All three of his top-10 finishes and all five of his top-10 results have come this spring, including a tie for third place at the Southwestern Invitational.
McCarthy has a 72.92 scoring average and has posted seven top-20 finishes, including a tie for second place at the Western Intercollegiate.
On the Waves’ single-season scoring record list, Theegala currently ranks fifth, Cootes is eighth and Feagler is 18th.
Pepperdine, which finished second at this past weekend’s WCC Championships, has the NCAA Regionals up next. The field will be announced on May 4 and play will be held May 15-17.
