MALIBU, Calif. - Michael Beard's first full season as the Pepperdine men's golf coach will include a return to nearby Saticoy Country Club, as he released the squad's 2013-14 schedule today.
The Waves will host the 12-team Jones Sports Invitational at Saticoy on February 24-25. Pepperdine previously hosted a tournament there from 1999-2007, and won it four of the nine times (including 2001 when Beard was a senior).
"To have the opportunity to play a college event at Saticoy Country Club, let alone host one, is very special," said Beard, a former Pepperdine All-American who took over as head coach in December 2012. "I believe it is one of the best golf courses in Southern California. It requires the player to hit every shot in his bag. I am very grateful for the interest Saticoy has in college golf, and to have the support of the membership makes the tournament that much better."
It's one of five new events on the schedule for the Waves, who will be headed to various points around the U.S., including Hawaii, Florida, Arizona and Washington.
In the fall, Pepperdine will compete at the Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational (hosted by Washington/Bremerton, Wash./Gold Mountain Golf Club), the Alister MacKenzie Invitational (hosted by California/Sonoma, Calif./Sonoma Golf Club), the Bill Cullum Invitational (hosted by Cal State Northridge/Simi Valley, Calif./Wood Ranch Golf Club) and the Princeville Intercollegiate (hosted by Hawaii/Princeville, Kauai, Hawaii/Makai Golf Club).
In the spring, the Waves have the Sea Best Invitational (hosted by Jacksonville/Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./TPC Sawgrass), The Prestige at PGA West (hosted by UC Davis and Stanford/Palm Springs, Calif./PGA West Norman Course), the Jones Sports Invitational at Saticoy, the San Diego Classic (hosted by San Diego/Chula Vista, Calif./San Diego Country Club), the ASU Thunderbird Invitational (hosted by Arizona State/Tempe, Ariz./Karsten Golf Course) and the Redhawk Invitational (hosted by Seattle/University Place, Wash./Chambers Bay Golf Course).
TPC Sawgrass is the host of The Players Championship, while Chambers Bay is the site of the 2015 U.S. Open.
"Playing in these events maintains our strong tournament schedule and allows our players to compete on PGA Tour-quality golf courses," Beard said. "I'm very pleased with the variety of courses where we'll see different weather and levels of difficulty. In order to play golf at the highest level, it's imperative to gain experience playing on different types of grass as well as traveling across the country."
The West Coast Conference Championships will be April 14-16 at a site yet to be determined. The NCAA Regionals will be held May 15-17 at six sites: Auburn, Missouri, North Carolina State, Northern Illinois, Oregon and UTSA. The NCAA Championships are May 27 to June 1 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.
Pepperdine will return all five of its golfers that were in the lineup for the 2013 WCC Championships, including sophomore Cody McManus (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS), who earned All-WCC honorable mention honors. Senior Jeremy Sanders (Chatsworth, Calif./New Community Jewish HS/Redlands) was the team's top scorer last season, averaging 73.96 strokes per round. Parker Page (Louisville, Ky./Ballard HS) is the team's other senior.
"I'm really looking forward to our season starting up in September," Beard said. "We have two freshmen coming in that are extremely committed players, four sophomores that all gained invaluable tournament experience last season, and our lone junior and two seniors are anxious to be the leaders of the team this year. All of these guys are very competitive with each other and I believe that alone will help us achieve our goals this season."
