MALIBU, California – Nine members of the Pepperdine men’s and women’s golf teams earned preseason All-West Coast Conference status, while the men’s squad was named the league favorite in a unanimous choice among the rest of the league’s coaches.

The Pepperdine men received eight of the nine first-place votes (coaches weren’t allowed to vote for their own program) to easily outdistance BYU and Saint Mary’s in the poll. The Pepperdine women, who received one first-place vote, were picked to finish second behind BYU.

The four returning members of the men’s team -- which finished second at the 2017 WCC Championships, third at the NCAA Stanford Regional and 13th at the NCAA Championships – all earned All-WCC first team honors last season and were picked to earn that status again this year. They are juniors Roy Cootes (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) and Sahith Theegala (Chino Hills, Calif./Diamond Bar HS) and sophomores Clay Feagler (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) and Joshua McCarthy (Danville, Calif./De La Salle HS).

No other men’s program had more than two players on the preseason All-WCC team. Theegala earned co-Player of the Year honors last season and Freshman of the Year the season before that.

For the women, all five players – seniors Tatiana Wijaya (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Katherine Zhu (Vancouver, B.C.), juniors Hira Naveed (Perth, Australia) and Patricia Wong (Walnut, Calif./Walnut HS) and sophomore Momoka Kobori (Rangiora, New Zealand) – from last year’s team that finished second at the WCC Championships, third at the NCAA Albuquerque Regional and 23rd at the NCAA Championships – made the All-WCC preseason team.

No other women’s program had more than two players on the preseason All-WCC team. Naveed and Wijaya will be trying to make the All-WCC first team for the third time in their careers, while Wong and Zhu will try for the second time. Kobori was the 2017 WCC Freshman of the Year.

The WCC Championships will be hosted by San Diego on April 16-18.
