MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine men's golf coach Michael Beard announced today that Anthony Cecere and Connor Nam will join the Waves next year after submitting their national letters-of-intent during the fall signing period.
"I'm really excited to have signed Anthony and Connor for the 2014 class," Beard said. "Both are relatively late bloomers and have shown a steady improvement over the last two years. I see them adding to the competitiveness of our team and being great for our team chemistry."
Cecere hails from Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., and attends St. Margaret's Episcopal School. He's been named to the All-Academy League first team every season, and was a 2013 Orange County Register all-country second team selection. In junior golf, he's been as high as 56th in the Polo Rankings this past year. He finished in the top 10 at the Heather Farr and won a preseason AJGA event at Oak Valley. He has five top-five finishes in AJGA play and qualified for the Toyota Tour Cup the last four years.
Said Cecere: "Pepperdine will give me the best chance to succeed as a collegiate golfer and student. The beautiful location, great weather and well-rounded people equate to an atmosphere that is better than anywhere else in the world for me. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to play for the best coaching staff that I have met, and I want to help lead Pepperdine to the NCAA championship."
Said Beard: "Not only is Anthony already a great player, he is only going to get better. His work ethic as well as his leadership qualities will impact our team in a positive way. He understands the expectation there is both academically and athletically and he is eager to make a difference."
Nam is from Scottsdale, Ariz. He is being homeschooled and also takes classes at Scottsdale Community College. He has four top-five and nine top-10 finishes in junior golf, including second-place finishes at the Arizona State Junior Match Play Championship and the Thompson Individual. He played for Chaparral High School during the 2012 and 2013 seasons and made the all-city team in 2013. Nam led the 2013 Arizona Men's Amateur Publinks Championship with an opening-round 68 before finishing tied for 14th.
Said Nam: "I believe my game can grow the most under Coach Beard and the Pepperdine golf program. Pepperdine is a place that supports genuine Christian values and offers a top-notch education. These points, mixed with Pepperdine's great weather and beautiful campus, make it a place where I can grow as a golfer and a person."
Said Beard: "Connor is a very mature young man with a strong desire to be the best he can be. He is a great ball-striker with a tremendous work ethic. I am looking forward to the opportunity to help him achieve his goals."
The men's golf team begins the spring season at the Sea Best Invitational in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., on February 3-4.
