MALBIU, Calif. – The #20 Pepperdine men’s tennis team swept both Loyola Marymount and #55 Santa Clara in a West Coast Conference doubleheader on the courts of the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center today.  The Waves are now 5-1 on the season.

The morning session featured Pepperdine and LMU in a fight for a point in the PCH Cup standings -- a season-long competition between the two rivals.  The Waves swept all three doubles matches, before shutting out the Lions in the six singles contests.  The home victory for Pepperdine added one point to its year-long total to extend its lead to 7.5-5.0.

Alex Llompart (Carolina, Puerto Rico) and Alfredo Moreno (Queretaro, Mexico) quickly disposed of Tyler Gottshall and Jack Zapala, 8-3, before Daniel Moss (Malibu, Calif./Malibu HS) and Stuart Keplar (Dallas, Texas/Pearce HS) clinched the doubles point in the No. 3 match.  The tandem defeated Daniel Simko and Tom Price by a score of 8-2.

Hugh Clarke (Brisbane, Australia) and Finn Tearney (Wellington, New Zealand), who hold a Campbell/ITA ranking of #35, topped Alex Wilton and Sebastian Bustamante 8-4 in the top match.

The Waves continued to roll, winning all six matches in straight sets.  Clarke made his dual season debut on the singles court with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Tom Price.  Alejandro Moreno (Queretaro, Mexico) also made his way into the singles lineup for the first time in 2011, and emerged with a 6-4, 6-3 win against Simko.

After a short break for lunch, Pepperdine took to the court with the Broncos.  Llompart and Alfredo Moreno nearly blanked Maxime Armengaud and John Lamble, allowing just one game in the first win of the afternoon.  The pair is now 5-1 this season.

Jenson Turner (Woodland Hill, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) and Sebastian Fanselow (Essen, Germany) followed suit with an 8-2 victory against Eugene Muchynski and Tom Pham.  The tandem has held down the No. 3 doubles position with a 4-0 record this year.

Clarke and Tearney improved to 5-1 following an 8-4 win in the top match.

Santa Clara tested the Waves in singles, as they forced four of the six contests to go three sets.  The Waves were up to the challenge, however, and prevailed in every match.

Mousheg Hovhannisyan (North Hollywood, Calif./Continental Academy) gave Pepperdine a 2-0 overall lead, following a two-set win over Nicholas Vinel.  Hovhannisyan won both frames by a score of 6-4.  Tearney soon followed with a 6-3, 6-4 win in the top match.  The sophomore remains undefeated this dual season, bringing his winning streak to six.

Clarke claimed the first set, 6-2, in the No. 6 match before dropping a closely combated second set, 7-5, to Muchynski.  The junior Wave bounced back in the third, winning 6-4 to tally the fourth and deciding point in the team score.

Alfredo Moreno suffered a 6-4 first-set loss, before winning sets two and three by the same score.  Llompart also stumbled in the opening frame, but fought back with a 6-2 win in the second.  In the final stanza, the #40-ranked Llompart allowed just one game to tally the win and bring his dual season record to a perfect 6-0.

Fanselow secured the Waves’ second sweep of the day, defeating Armengaud 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

The Waves gear up for a road contest with #2 USC on Feb. 11 at 1:30 p.m., before returning to the courts of the Ralphs-Straus Tennis center for a 2 p.m. tangle with #35 Boise State on Feb. 12.
