MALIBU, Calif. - Although seniors David Sofaer and Alex Sarkissian both earned come-from-behind victories in singles, the #32 Pepperdine men's tennis team could not overcome a powerful #5 USC squad and fell 5-2.

The Trojans (11-2), who have only lost the doubles point twice this season, prevailed in the first three matches of the afternoon.

After Roberto Quiroz and Robbie Bellamy defeated Pedro Leme (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Mackenzie Tambore) and Rakshay Thakkar (Pune, India/St. Vincent's HS), Max de Vroome and Eric Johnson clinched the doubles point at No. 2 with an 8-4 win over Tom Hill (Birmingham, England/K12 International Academy) and David Sofaer (Bellevue Hill, Australia/Sydney Distance Education HS).

The top-15 showdown between #7 Alex Sarkissian (Glendale, Calif./Glendale CC) and Francis Alcantara (Cagayan de Oro, Philippines/Fresno State) and #12 Yannick Hanfmann and Ray Sarmiento was not completed.

USC powered its way through singles to clinch the dual, but not without an applaudable fight by the Waves (7-6).

Freshman Alexander Solonin (Tarzana, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS), in just his second appearance in the single lineup, rallied from a first set loss vs. #43-ranked Jonny Wang to take a 4-2 lead in the second. His campaign to send the match to a third fell short however, and Wang won 6-4 to close out the match.

Sofaer bounced back from a loss in the opening frame to storm through the second 6-1 against de Vroom. The Waves' senior came through in the clutch, and won 11-9 in the 10-point tiebreaker to put a point on the board for the home team.

Fellow senior Sarkissian, ranked #42, won his third straight and team best eighth match of the dual season from his No. 1 spot in the lineup. Facing #10-ranked Hanfmann, Sarkissian narrowly dropped the first set by a 6-4 tally but came back with a 6-3 win in the second.

The Wave dominated the 10 point tiebreaker, taking a 6-2 lead and never looking back. Sarkissian went on to win 10-2 for his second win over a top-10 ranked opponent this season.

With the victory, Sarkissian avenges his loss to Hanfmann last fall in the finals of the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship.

Pepperdine continues this week's action tomorrow, March 8, with a 4 p.m. dual vs. #51 Texas Christian.
