URBANA, Ill. - Sebastian Fanselow of the Pepperdine men's tennis team won once again today at the NCAA Singles Championship to advance to the quarterfinals, marking his best-ever showing at the tournament. He becomes the Waves' first quarterfinalist since Andre Begemann and Bassam Beidas both did so during the 2008 season.
This is Fanselow's (Essen, Germany/Kaplan College Prep) third time competing in the NCAA Singles Tournament. His best finish prior to this year came in 2011 when, as a sophomore, he reached the round of 16.
Fanselow, a 9-16 seed in the 64-person bracket, went up against seventh-seeded Peter Kobelt of Ohio State. After edging the Buckeye 6-4 in set one, the senior Wave cruised to a 6-2 win in the second to advance to the next round.
It was Fanselow's most convincing win of the tournament thus far, having needed three sets to earn the "W" in his two prior matches. Yesterday, the Wave edged Oklahoma's Guillermo Alcorta 10-8 in the third-set tiebreaker.
Alex Sarkissian (Glendale, Calif./Glendale CC), Pepperdine's second representative in the singles championship, saw his first year in a Wave uniform come to a close today. The junior faced off against Japie De Klerk of Tulsa in an incredibly close battle.
After both competitors claimed a set in the tiebreaker, De Klerk went on a run in the third frame and held on to win 6-2.
Sarkissian, ranked #62 in the ITA singles poll, concluded the year with a 23-6 overall record. He earned ITA All-American status in singles and was a second-team performer in both singles and doubles in the All-West Coast Conference awards.
#11-ranked Fanselow will face #19 Andreas Mies of Auburn on Saturday morning. Match time is set for 10 a.m. (PT)
