Tulsa, Okla. – After a marathon three-set win yesterday, Alex Sarkissian of the Pepperdine men’s tennis team stormed into the consolation quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Championship with a straight-set win over a ranked opponent today.
Although Sarkissian (Glendale, Calif./Glendale CC) dropped his season-opening match on Thursday in the main draw, the senior bounced back in consolation with a 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (4) win over #28 Esben Hess-Olesen.
Now with a few matches under his belt, Sarkissian seems to have found his stride, winning decisively today.
Up against Baylor’s Mate Zsiga, ranked #60 in singles, Sarkissian won the opening set by the narrow margin of 6-4.
The Wave was in firm control of set two, cruising to a 6-1 triumph to advance to tomorrow’s consolation quarterfinals where he’ll face #21 Andrew Bettles of Boise State.
“Alex was outstanding today. He played very smart tennis throughout the entire match,” praised associate head coach Marcelo Ferreira. “He was very consistent from the baseline and aggressive whenever he had the chances.
“He beat a talented player today,” continued Ferreira, “and he is definitely improving in every match.”
Live scores for Sarkissian’s match tomorrow can be found at the Tournament Central. Saturday’s schedule includes two rounds of singles. Champions for both the main and consolation draws will be crowned on Sunday.
