Men's Tennis Opens Action at Battle in the Bay Classic

SAN FRANCISCO - The Pepperdine men's tennis team opened action at the Battle in the Bay Classic today at the California Tennis Club. Senior David Sofaer had a successful day, going undefeated in both singles and doubles.
Sofaer (Bellevue Hill, Australia/Sydney Distance Education HS) first teamed up with freshman Stefan Menichella (Santa Barbara, Calif./University HS) in doubles. The Wave duo edged Gregory Bayane and Andre Goransson of Cal 7-3 in the tiebreaker to win the match 8-7.
In singles, Sofaer took down Tuomas Manner of Saint Mary's in straight sets before defeating UCLA's Karue Sell 6-0, 6-4.
The senior will battle in the round of 16 tomorrow afternoon.
Menichella rebounded from a loss in his first round singles match with a dominant 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Trey Strobel of Stanford in consolation.
Kento Tanaka-Tamaki (Kihei, Hawaii/St. Anthony Junior-Senior HS), Pepperdine's third representative at the tournament, Sofaer and Menichella continue play at the Battle of the Bay Classic on Saturday.
