MALIBU, Calif. – After an incredible run at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship, Alex Sarkissian of the Pepperdine men’s tennis team settled for second place after falling in the finals. Yannick Hanfmann of USC took home the crown, wining in three sets.
Sarkissian (Glendale, Calif./Glendale CC) powered through the first five rounds, not dropping a single set.
In today’s final, Hanfmann got a break up on Sarkissian early on and rode the advantage to a 6-3 win in set one.
Sarkissian answered in set two, breaking the Trojan’s serve to take a 4-3 lead. The Wave held serve en route to a 6-4 triumph to force a third frame.
The deciding set was an uphill battle from the start, as Sarkissian fell behind a break 0-3. Unable to find his rhythm, Sarkissian lost in set three, 6-0, and had to settle for a runner-up finish at the regional championship.
With the win, Hanfmann earned an automatic bid to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship in November.
David Sofaer (Bellevue Hill, Australia/Sydney Distance Education HS), Stefan Menichella (Santa Barbara, Calif./University HS), Kento Tanaka-Tamaki (Kihei, Hawaii/St. Anthony Junior-Senior HS) and Alexander Solonin (Tarzana, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) keep the fall season rolling with the USTA Collegiate Clay Court Classic this weekend, Oct. 25-27, in Orlando, Fla. Sunday’s matches will be broadcast live on ESPN3.com.
