MALIBU, Calif. – The #12 Pepperdine men’s tennis team was predicted to place first in the West Coast Conference in a poll of the league’s coaches, it was announced today by the conference office. Additionally, seniors Alex Sarkissian and David Sofaer both earned spots on the All-WCC Preseason Team.
The Waves, 2-1 after opening the dual season last week, earned 80 total points and eight of the 10 first-place votes.
San Diego came in second with 73 points and the remaining two first-place votes. Pepperdine faced the Toreros in a non-conference dual on Friday and won by a 4-2 tally.
2013 WCC Tournament runner-up BYU followed in third place.
Both Pepperdine players ranked in the ITA singles rankings earned spots on the six-person preseason squad. Sarkissian (Glendale, Calif./Glendale CC), currently ranked #33 in singles and an ITA All-American in 2013, is a perfect 3-0 from the No. 1 spot in the lineup.
The senior topped fellow All-WCC preseason selection Clarke Spinosa, currently listed at a league-best #27 in singles, 6-1, 6-1 on Friday.
Sofaer (Bellevue Hill, Australia/Sydney Distance Education HS) was also voted to the all-conference preseason team. The senior is ranked #58 in singles and holds down the No. 2 spot in the lineup for Pepperdine.
The Waves have 40 official West Coast Conference Tournament titles their name and have not lost the league tournament since 1990.
Pepperdine continues the dual season this Wednesday, when they battle with #24 Tulsa on the road. The Waves return home on Sunday, Feb. 2 to take on Cal Poly at noon.
