Pepperdine Men's Tennis Climbs to a No. 5 National Ranking

Malibu, Calif. - After winning its first six consecutive matches, including a 4-3 win over then-No. 1 Virginia in its season opener, the Pepperdine men's tennis team has climbed to a No. 5 national ITA ranking, the highest ranking in head coach Adam Steinberg's four years with the Waves, it was announced Tuesday.

Florida holds the No. 1 rank with Georgia, Illinois, UCLA and Pepperdine taking the Top 5 spots followed by Mississippi, Virginia, Baylor, Duke and LSU.

Coming into the spring season with a No. 9 ranking, the Waves have defeated Virginia, Saint Mary's, San Francisco, UC Irvine and most recently Boise State and BYU. Pepperdine is perfect in winning the doubles point, with the Wave duo of senior Scott Doerner and sophomore Andre Begemann leading the roster with a 6-0 record. Their perfect record includes an 8-3 defeat over No. 19 Rylan Rizza and Darrin Cohen of Virginia and an 8-5 defeat over No. 7 Luke Shields and Thomas Schoek of Boise State.

Pepperdine proves its strength in singles as well with Doerner and senior Ivor Lovrak remaining undefeated at 6-0, while freshman Omar Altmann is unbeaten at 5-0. The Waves are 3-1 against nationally ranked players in singles. Senior Pedro Rico defeated No. 10 Somdev Devvarman of Virginia, Doerner defeated No. 13 Luke Shields of Boise State and Lovrak beat No. 54 Rylan Rizza of Virginia.

The Waves look to continue their win streak on Saturday, February 4 when they face Cal Poly at 10 a.m. followed by a 2:30 p.m. match against Wisconsin at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu, Calif.
