Pedro Rico Advances at ITA Men's All-American Championship

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Pepperdine men's tennis sophomore Pedro Rico is one victory shy of earning a berth into the Main Draw of the Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships, after defeating Matt Long of Oklahoma 6-2, 6-1, earlier today.

The ITA Men's All-American the first of three national championship events during the 2003-04 collegiate tennis season. The tournament is being held in Chattanooga, Tenn., October 9-12 at The Champions Club.

"This is probably the biggest tournament so far for Pedro, so he came out slightly nervous," said Pepperdine head coach, Adam Steinberg. However, he quickly settled down and started to play like he know's how...and things went in his favor."

"Other than the NCAA Championships, this is the biggest tournament of the season. I believe both Pedro and Calle are some of the top players in the country and my hopes are they prove that to everyone else this season."

Rico, the top-seed, will compete at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday against Nathan Price of Arkansas.

Thirty-six of the top 40 players in the preseason ITA national singles rankings highlight this year's main draw, including the nine of the top 10. Pepperdine senior sensation Calle Hansen will open play beginning on Thursday.

The Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships include six days of qualifying matches leading up to the Oct. 9-12 64-player, 32-doubles team main draw. 256-singles player and 128-doubles team prequalifying tournaments are played October 3-6 which feed into 64-player and 32-doubles team qualifying tournaments October 7-8.

The Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championship, the largest single tournament in the country, offers the first national singles and doubles titles of the season, and are followed by the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November and the the season-ending NCAA Championships in May.
