J.D. Schleppenbach begins his second season as an assistant coach for the Waves in 2014. Schleppenbach was elevated to assistant coach after serving as volunteer coach in 2011 and 2012. His ties with the Pepperdine men's volleyball program date back to 2006, when he began his four-year stint as a player.
Schleppenbach graduated from Pepperdine in 2010 with a degree in international business and was a four-year starter for the Waves. He averaged 2.23 kills and 1.70 digs while in Malibu, and was voted to the All-MPSF third team as a senior. He still ranks tied for third in career digs (692), tied for seventh in digs per set (1.70), and third in sets played (407).
"I'm very pleased to be welcoming J.D. back to Pepperdine," commented head coach Marv Dunphy after Schleppenbach's hiring, "He knows the program and myself and he possess a good knowledge of all aspects of the game."
After graduation, Schleppenbach played briefly overseas for Sun Volley in Oulu, Finland, before an injury cut the stint short. He later trained with the U.S. National team and won gold with the squad at the 2010 Pan American Games.
In addition to Schleppenbach's volunteer coaching experience at Pepperdine, he has served as a coach for the Santa Monica Beach Club and the Balboa Bay Volleyball Club.
