MALIBU, Calif. – Led by an 18 kills effort from Maurice Torres, the #4 Pepperdine men’s volleyball team shut out UC Santa Barbara in three sets on Tuesday night. The Waves remain undefeated at home at 6-0 and move to 8-4 overall on the season.

Set scores for the contest were 25-17, 25-22 and 25-20.

Torres (Riverside, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS), the reigning MPSF Player of the Week, was the only player to reach double figures in kills for either team. His 18 kills were earned on a sizzling .615 (18 kills-2 errors-26 attempts) hitting percentage. The senior also recorded three digs and three blocks.

Scott Rhein (Pleasant View, Tenn./Aaron Academy) registered nine kills and five blocks, mirroring his stat line from Pepperdine’s 3-2 triumph over BYU last Friday. Parker Kalmbach (Coto de Caza, Calif./Tesoro HS) was an errorless 3-for-6 on the attack, and added a match-high eight blocks. Kalmbach currently averages a league-best 1.49 blocks/set in 2013.

The Gauchos (5-11, 3-9 MPSF) were paced by Kevin Donohue with nine kills, followed by Dylan Davis with seven.

Overall the Waves hit for a .420 (40-11-69) rate on the attack, while UCSB countered with just a .162 (32-19-80) hitting percentage.

Business was booming for the Malibu Roofing Company in the opening frame. The Waves registered nine blocks in set one, limiting UCSB to a -.038 (8-9-26) clip. Kalmbach and Nikola Antonijevic (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Stevenson HS) tallied four rejections apiece, while Matt West (Seattle, Wash./Shorewood HS), Rhein and Josh Taylor (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) were each credited with three.

Tied at 8-all, Pepperdine went on an 8-2 run and never looked back, putting the stanza away 25-17.

Although the Gauchos took a four-point lead in set two, 8-12, the Waves fought from behind and eventually knotted the score at 16 following a Kalmbach-Taylor block. A sideout game ensued until, tied at 21, Pepperdine went on another blocking spree to tip the scales in its favor. After a Rhein kill gave the home team set point, Kalmbach and West threw the roof on to clinch the frame 25-22.

The Waves went up 5-2 early in the third, but UCSB score five unanswered points to take over control. Pepperdine never lingered far behind, but it was not until Kalmbach issued two consecutive aces that the Waves would regain the lead once and for all. With a 16-14 advantage, Pepperdine surged forward and took match point at 24-17. Although the Gauchos made a late break thanks in part to the hot serving of Matt Silver from off the bench, the Waves got the final side out they needed to secure the frame 25-20 and win the match.

At the end of the night, Pepperdine had 15.5 total blocks compared to UC Santa Barbara’s 7.5.

Taylor finished the evening with six kills, while Antonijevic posted six blocks. West quarterbacked the offense with 33 assists.

The Waves entertain #7 UCLA on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 5 p.m. The Bruins are 10-8 overall in 2013 and 6-6 in MPSF action. Fans that cannot make it to Firestone Fieldhouse this weekend can catch the match live and for free on WaveCasts.
