Feb. 27, 2014
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Behind a match-high 17 kills out of Parker Kalmbach, the #4 Pepperdine men’s volleyball team swept the season series vs. Cal Baptist with a 3-0 win tonight inside the Van Dyne Gym. The Waves defeated the Lancers last week in Malibu by a 3-1 tally.
With the 25-23, 25-23, 25-19 victory, Pepperdine moves to 9-3 on the season and in MPSF matches.
The Waves fired offensively at a .376 (48 kills-10 errors-101 attempts) hitting percentage, marking the eighth time this season Matt West (Seattle, Wash./Shorewood HS) has set Pepperdine to a .300+ team clip. The junior All-American finished the night with 39 assists and a team-high seven digs.
Kalmbach (Coto de Caza, Calif./Tesoro HS) paced Pepperdine in kills for the fourth-consecutive match, putting down 17 tonight. The Lancers were unable to contain the Waves’ opposite side hitter, who committed just two errors on his match-high 34 swings.
Also reaching double figures in kills was Kyle Gerrans (Lo Gatos, Calif./Valley Christian HS), equally as unstoppable on offense with 11 kills while hitting .435 (11-2-23).
Nikola Antonijevic (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Stevenson HS) had an impressive night. The middle blocker took nine attempts and saw eight find the floor for the kill. Defensively, he led Pepperdine with three blocks.
Cal Baptist jumped out to an early 5-1 lead with the home court advantage, and Pepperdine was forced to play catch up for the first half of the frame. Although the Waves tied it up several times over the course of the first set, they did not take their first lead until set point, 24-23, following an untimely Lancer attack error. Antonijevic put down a kill – his fifth of the set after just as many attempts – to wrap things up 25-23.
Pepperdine once again began set two on a bit of a low note, falling behind 0-3 to prompt head coach Marv Dunphy to call for a break in the action. Although CBU rattled off one more point after the timeout, the Waves scored four in a row, capped by a Scott Rhein (Pleasant View, Tenn./Aaron Academy) ace to balance the score.
The set continued to go back and forth, until Pepperdine clawed its way ahead 20-17 following a Rhein- Matt Tarantino (Van Nuys, Calif./Bishop Alemany) block. The Lancers would not go away quietly, however, and pieced together a 3-1 run to come back within one at 21-20. Gerrans killed a ball to give the Waves a crucial sideout, and the visitors held on to win 25-23.
Pepperdine found its rhythm early in the third and took a commanding 10-5 lead. Kalmbach took over for the Waves, putting down seven kills off of 12 errorless attempts. At match point, Tarantino did the honors of clinching the win with his fourth put away of the evening.
Johannes Brink, who posted 24 kills against the Waves last week in Malibu, paced Cal Baptist with 11 tonight.
Pepperdine is now Provo, Utah bound to take on MPSF standings leader and #2-ranked BYU on Saturday, March 1.
