PALO ALTO, Calif. – The No. 8 Pepperdine men’s volleyball team swept Stanford in Maples Pavilion for a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation road win on Saturday night.
David Wieczorek and Alex Harthaller each hit for double-figures to help advance the Waves to a 10-4 overall record and a 4-2 league record this season. The Waves marked 25-22, 25-21 and 27-25 set wins over Stanford (3-15, 1-6 MPSF) for the victory.

The Waves outhit the Cardinal with 40 kills on a .305 success rate, compared to 39 kills on a .247 clip. Stanford led the match with 38 assists and 36 digs, opposing the Waves’ 36 assists and 28 digs, but Pepperdine was good for four aces and 7.5 team blocks against Stanford’s three aces and 4.0 team blocks.

The Waves have posted two top-five upsets in the past two weeks, with a 3-0 sweep over #2 UCLA and a 3-1 win over #4 UC Irvine.
This is Pepperdine’s third sweep of the season thus far.
David Wieczorek leads the conference in points/set, aces/set and kills/set and is second in hitting percentage.
Robert Mullahey is second in the conference in assists/set.
The Waves and Cardinal came out equal in the first set, with both teams going point-for-point en route to a 13-13 tie. Pepperdine then broke away with a few kills from Alex Harthaller and Max Chamberlain, accompanied by a Harthaller, Chamberlain, Colby Harriman block party for a 20-17 advantage late in the action. Stanford started to close the gap to a one-point deficit at the 23-22 Pepperdine lead, but the Waves stayed resilient and won the set 25-22 on a David Wieczorek kill.
In the second set, the Waves came out strong, amassing a 7-3 lead early with kills from Wieczorek and Harthaller. Pepperdine continued with the lead fueled by a big offensive towards a 17-12 advantage. The opposition tied the set at 21-21, but the Waves stayed strong again and picked up a 25-21 set win on back-to-back Harthaller smashes.
The Waves worked ahead early in the third set, putting up an 11-6 lead with blocks from Harriman and Chamberlain. The Waves went on a few other small runs en route to a 16-9 lead with another block from Chamberlain and Harriman and a Chamberlain kill, ace back-to-back sequence. Stanford closed the gap late in the action, coming back from a 19-14 Waves’ lead to tie the set at 21’s. Pepperdine still had the momentum, however, and although the Cardinal fought of two match-point options, a final kill from Chamberlain and a Robert Mullahey, Chamberlain block won the match on a 27-25 final set score.
