MALIBU, Calif. – A well-balanced attack led the #5 Pepperdine men’s volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over #7 UCLA on Tuesday evening to sweep the season series against the Bruins. Four Waves, including Josh Taylor, Parker Kalmbach, Matt Tarantino and Kyle Gerrans, surpassed double digits in kills.
With the 25-18, 28-30, 25-23, 25-22 win, the Waves improve to 11-5 on the year, while UCLA drops to 14-7 and 11-6 in the MPSF. It was the first time Pepperdine swept the season series vs. the Bruins since 2010.
Matt West (Seattle, Wash./Shorewood HS) set his squad to the tune of a .328 (59 kills-19 errors-122 attempts), while picking up 10 digs. He dished 49 assists.
For the second match in a row, Tarantino (Van Nuys, Calif./Bishop Alemany) did not commit a single attack error en route to a new season-high hitting percentage. After swinging at a .733 (11 kills-0 errors-15 attempts) clip last week vs. Pacific, the middle blocker put down 12 kills off of 16 errorless swings today for a new career-high of .750.
Taylor (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) led all hitters with 17 kills, followed by Kalmbach (Coto de Caza, Calif./Tesoro HS) with 13 and Gerrans (Los Gatos, Calif./Valley Christian HS) with 11.
Both Kalmbach and Gerrans finished just one dig shy of the double-double and finished the night with nine apiece.
Brennan Anderson (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar HS/Ohio State) protected the backcourt with 10 digs.
The Waves and Bruins battled back and forth during the opening points but an 11-3 run put Pepperdine out in front 14-6. Although UCLA narrowed the gap to three, the visiting squad surged forward thanks to a strong offensive effort and sound serving. Antonijevic and Kalmbach threw the roof on to clinch the set 25-18.
Taylor led the floor with five kills.
Although the Waves played catch-up for much of the second frame, Leonardo Granato (Reseda, Calif./Pierce College) came in off the bench and skillfully guided an overpass back down for a kill to knot the score 19-19. In an exact repeat of the play, Nikola Antonijevic (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Stevenson HS) put down the easy kill off of the overpass on the next play to take over the lead.
It was anyone’s game from there, as both teams took multiple set points without being able to convert. Jackson Bantle finally broke through for UCLA, dishing an ace to secure the frame 30-28.
The pivotal third set was close from start to finish. Tied at 23-23 Gerrans put down the kill for the sideout. The Malibu Roofing Company came through for the second time of the match at set point, as West and Tarantino teamed up for the rejection to put the stanza away.
UCLA jumped to the early lead in the fourth but a 5-1 run capped by a Kalmbach kill evened the set at 15-all.
Another Pepperdine run, featuring three blocks in four points, sent the visiting squad to a 19-16 lead. From there it was just a matter of siding out, which the Waves successfully did. Taylor did the honors of earning Pepperdine’s final sideout, killing a ball on the back-row attack.
Antonijevic ended the night with five kills hitting .500 and four blocks.
Kalmbach was credited with seven roofs.
The Waves continue the week with a road match at #4 UC Santa Barbara on Friday inside the UCSB Rob Gym.
