PALO ALTO, Calif. – The #3 Pepperdine men’s volleyball team was unable to slow down #6 Stanford’s furious offensive assault, and fell 3-0 on Friday evening inside Maples Pavilion. The Waves were led by Josh Taylor with 12 kills.
With the 25-21, 25-18, 21-19 loss, Pepperdine drops to 14-6 overall and in MPSF matches. The Waves, second in the conference standings to open the week, still hold a half match lead on both UC Santa Barbara and Long Beach State. Both the Gauchos (at BYU) and 49ers (at UC Irvine) are in action tonight and could potentially move into a tie for second place with the Waves with a win.
Although Pepperdine hit at a respectable .256 (36 kills-14 errors-86 attempts) hitting percentage, the Cardinal swung at a blistering .453 (51-12-86) clip to control the tempo of the contest. The home squad led the majority of the way, save a few points during the early portions of the first two sets.
Stanford improves to 16-7 overall, and a fifth-place 13-7 in the MPSF.
Outside hitter Taylor (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) put down 12 kills on the evening, while adding an ace and a pair of blocks for 14.0 points.
Kyle Gerrans (Los Gatos, Calif./Valley Christian HS) also reached double figures, tallying 11 kills while hitting .435 (11-1-23).
Three Stanford players surpassed the 10-kills plateau, including Brian Cook with 17 and both Steven Irvin and Eric Mochalski with 11 each.
Matt West (Seattle, Wash./Shorewood HS) scattered 27 assists, along with three kills and a team-best six digs.
Pepperdine looks to rebound tomorrow vs. Pacific. The Waves and Tigers square off inside the Alex G. Spanos Center at 7 p.m. The match can be watched live here.
