No. 8 Waves Sweep Past UC San Diego on Senior Night

MALIBU, Calif.: – The 8th-ranked Pepperdine men’s volleyball team celebrated ‘Senior Night’ with a sweep over UC San Diego in Firestone Fieldhouse this Thursday night, besting the Tritons with 27-25, 25-20 and 25-15 final set wins for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation victory.
The Waves (9-10, 7-9 MPSF) hit for a .340 success rate on 45 kills, while amassing two aces, 41 digs and 9.0 team blocks. The Tritons (7-16, 3-12 MPSF) amassed a .125 hitting percentage with 34 kills, three aces, 36 digs and 5.0 team blocks throughout the night.
The seven Waves’ seniors were honored prior to the match, including Mitchell Penning, Kyle Suppes, Soren Dion-Kindem, James Gehrels, Chad McCalliseter, Max States and Joshua Stewart.
Redshirt-sophomore David Wieczorek (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) led the team with 17 kills on an impressive .556 clip, while also adding four blocks and two aces for the Waves.
Senior Soren Dion-Kindem (Agoura Hills, Calif./Agoura HS) had his fourth-career and second-seasonal double-double to celebrate senior night with 34 assists and 13 digs. He also picked up four blocks and two kills.
Senior Mitchell Penning (St. Louis, Mo./Westminster Christian HS) led the team with six blocks, including one solo rejection. He added five kills and .500 hitting output. Junior Weston Barnes (Laguna Beach, Calif./Laguna Beach HS) produced 10 digs and freshman Noah Dyer (San Clemente, Calif./Saddleback Valley Christian HS) was good for nine kills and seven digs.
Junior Clay Carr (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Harbor HS) finished the night with six kills on a .625 percentage, along with three blocks and sophomore Michael Wexter (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) ended with five kills and six digs.
In the first set, the Waves pulled ahead to a 9-6 advantage early on with a strong service output from Penning and kills from Dyer and Carr, but the opposition eventually tied the set at 12’s. After a few point-for-point exchanges, Pepperdine broke away from a 14-14 tie with smashes from Carr and a Wieczorek ace to gain a 22-17 lead late in the set. Despite a late comeback attempt from the Tritons, the Waves fought through a 25-25 tie score for a 27-25 victory on a kill from Wieczorek and an attack error from the other side of the net.
The Waves were much more comfortable in the second set. After exchanging points to the 8-8 mark, the Waves unleased the edge and blocked the way to an 18-13 advantage including collaborations from Dion-Kindem and Carr, Carr and Wieczorek and Wieczorek and Penning. Late in the set, Penning, tabbed another smash, along with back-to-back kills from Wieczorek to make it a 25-20 set score and put the Waves up 2-0.
Pepperdine absolutely crushed the opposition in the third set, breaking out to an 11-6 lead with a block from Penning and Dion-Kindem and kills from Penning, Dyer and Wexter. Wieczorek tabbed another service ace and two back-to-back blocks from Penning and Dion-Kindem and Penning and Wieczorek helped put the Waves ahead late. Penning delivered the final blow to win the set 25-15 and match in sweeping fashion to celebrate senior night.
