The Waves pulled ahead in the first set with a quick 3-1 advantage, but the opposition countered to even the score at 7's. Pepperdine picked up a 15-10 lead in the middle of the set, but strong attacks from across the net once again evened the score at 16-16. After USC collected their first advantage of the set, the Trojans worked for the 25-22 set win to pull ahead early.

After a 5-5 tie to open the second set, Pepperdine opened the flood gates and started crushing away towards an 18-12 lead late in the action. A big 10 kills from David Wieczorek in the second set alone helped the cause en route to a set point opportunity. Wieczorek put the set away 25-19 with an ace that painted the back line to tie the match.

USC's .552 hitting percentage throughout the third set helped the Trojans pull ahead late in the action. Each side worked towards a 24-24 tie, but a pair of kills from USC's Gianluca Grasso put the set away in the Trojan's favor 26-24.

Facing a one-set deficit, the Waves came out tough in the fourth set, but it would prove to be futile as the Trojans pulled ahead. Fueled with the lead, USC took the 25-18 final set win to secure the 3-1 upset over the Waves.
