USC's .552 hitting percentage throughout the third set helped the Trojans pull ahead late in the action. Each side worked towards a 24-24 tie, but a pair of kills from USC's Gianluca Grasso put the set away in the Trojan's favor 26-24.
Facing a one-set deficit, the Waves came out tough in the fourth set, but it would prove to be futile as the Trojans pulled ahead. Fueled with the lead, USC took the 25-18 final set win to secure the 3-1 upset over the Waves.
