Men's Volleyball Places Third at McDonald's Classic
Waves end trip to Canada with two solids wins to conclude the McDonald's Classic with a third-place finish.

KAMLOOPS, British Columbia – After a shaky start on Saturday, the Pepperdine men’s volleyball rebounded on Sunday with a pair of wins to take third place at the McDonald’s Classic exhibition tournament. The Waves defeated British Columbia in a rematch, 3-1, before downing Dalhousie in the bronze medal match, 3-0.
J.J. Mosolf (Saugus, Calif./Hart HS/Hawaii) paced Pepperdine against the Thunderbirds with 14 kills followed by Kyle Gerrans (Los Gatos, Calif./Valley Christian HS) with 12. Matt West (Seattle, Wash./Shorewood HS) handed out 46 assists in the 25-19, 26-24, 20-25, 25-17 triumph.
In the follow up match against the Tigers, the Waves handily won 25-15, 26-24, 25-22.
Josh Taylor (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) delivered 12 kills followed by Maurice Torres (Riverside, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) with 11. In addition, Torres led the assault at the service line and was credited with four aces.
Head coach Marv Dunphy once again altered his lineup, and Parker Kalmbach (Coto de Caza, Calif./Tesoro), normally an outside hitter, saw time in the middle. Kalmbach tallied eight kills from the position earned on a .462 (8 kills-2 errors-13 attempts) hitting percentage.
Pepperdine concludes exhibition action on Saturday, Jan. 5 with a 2 p.m. match vs. Alberta inside Firestone Fieldhouse. The regular season gets underway on Tuesday, Jan. 8 with a road contest at UC Irvine.
