Matt West Named MPSF Player of the Week
Men's Volleyball's Matt West recognized for his stellar performance last week vs. UC Irvine and UC San Diego.

MALIBU, Calif. - Sophomore setter Matt West of the Pepperdine men's volleyball team was honored as the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week, the conference announced today. West led the Waves to back-to-back home victories last week against #2 UC Irvine and UC San Diego.
West (Seattle, Wash./Shorewood HS) was the offensive maestro behind Pepperdine's victories, beginning with a 3-1 triumph over the Anteaters. He dished 51 assists in the match for a 12.75 assists/set average and also picked up 11 digs. The Waves hit .273 (61 kills-26 errors-128 attempts) in the defensive battle.
In the follow up contest against UC San Diego, West handed out 36 assists in the three-set sweep. He connected with Scott Rhein (Pleasant View, Tenn./Aaron Academy) for 13 kills off of 16 attempts for a .812 clip (fifth all-time at Pepperdine during the rally-scoring era). Overall, the Waves hit .362 (39-14-69) vs. the Tritons.
West averaged 12.43 assists/set on the week to bring his season average to 11.42. He also picked up 1.57 digs/set and added 0.71 blocks/set at the net.
With West directing the offense, the Waves are hitting .318 in 2013 - second in the league only behind BYU (.322).
In two seasons in Malibu, West has accumulated 2,108 total assists which ranks seventh in program history.
This is Wests' first MPSF Player of the Week award and second for the Waves in 2013. Maurice Torres (Riverside, Calif./Orange Lutheran HS) picked up player of the week accolades on Feb. 18.
Pepperdine opens its three-match road swing this Thursday, March 21 at USC. The match starts at 7 p.m. inside the Lyon Center.
