Wieczorek, Harthaller Sweep MPSF Weekly Honors
This is Wieczorek's fourth honor this season and Harthaller's first-career accolade
MALIBU, Calif. – David Wieczorek and Alex Harthaller swept the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation weekly honors this week after leading the No. 5 Pepperdine men’s volleyball team to three wins over ranked opponents in Firestone Fieldhouse, including a 3-1 win over then-ranked No. 3 Hawai’i.
Wieczorek earns his fifth career offensive player of the week honor and the fourth of this season, which is the first time a single player has tabbed four honors in a single-season since at least the 2006 season. MPSF do not go back further than that. This is the first-career defensive player of the week accolade for Harthaller.
David Wieczorek was unstoppable for the #7 Waves this week, propelling his team to three wins over ranked opponents including two sweeps and a 3-1 upset over #3 Hawai’i throughout. He posted a career-high six aces against #14 CUI and a season-high 22 kills against #3 UH. He averaged a staggering 6.40 points/set with 4.90 kills/set, 1.40 digs/set, 1.00 aces/set and 0.90 blocks/set in an all-around effort. He amassed 49 smashes with only 13 errors on 90 swings for a .400 success rate on the front line, while adding 10 aces, 14 digs and nine blocks including one solo rejection. He also marked 53 service receptions with only two errors for a .962 output on the back line.
In the four-set win over #3 Hawai’i, he marked a season-high 22 kills on a .390 clip, along with three aces, seven digs and four blocks for a solid 27-point performance. He also was solid in the back row with 20 service receptions without a single error. In the sweep over #14 Concordia-Irvine, he posted 12 kills on a .320 percentage, while putting down a career-high six aces and adding four blocks and 17 serve receptions with only two errors for 20 points in the match. In the sweep over #13 GCU, he put up 15 smashes on a .500 clip, along with an ace, five digs and a block solo, while adding 16 serve receptions with no errors for 17 points.
Alex Harthaller was instrumental for the Waves, propelling his team to three wins over ranked opponents in Firestone Fieldhouse last week as Pepperdine swept #13 GCU and #14 Concordia, Irvine, while upsetting #3 Hawai’i in four. Harthaller posted his first career double-double against UH. He averaged 4.40 points/set after posting 1.20 blocks/set, 1.90 digs/set, 0.30 aces/set and 3.50 kills/set for the Waves. He put up 35 kills on a .361 success rate, while adding three aces, 19 digs and 12 block assists throughout 10 sets played. He was also solid in the back line with 61 serve receptions with only two errors for a .967 success rate.
In the 3-1 win over #3 Hawai’i, he put up 14 kills on a .367 success rate, while adding four blocks and 11 digs for his first career double-double. He added an ace and 24 service receptions with only one error as well, while tabbing 17 points on the night. In the sweep over GCU, he put up 12 kills on a .435 clip, along with an ace, four digs and three blocks for 14.5 points. In the sweep over CUI, he added nine kills, along with four digs, five blocks and an ace, as well as 18 service receptions without a single error.
