Gary O'Brien was an assistant men's water polo coach for four seasons between 2008 and 2011.

During his first season with the Waves, he helped Pepperdine to a #2 national ranking, a second-place finish in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and a 21-7 record. Pepperdine has posted a 55-51 (.519) record in his four seasons.

He was also the head coach for youth, college and masters level athletes at Sharks Water Polo Club, which won the 2007 and 2009 U.S. National Masters Championships and placed third at the 2010 U20 U.S. National Championships.

O'Brien's prior collegiate experience includes serving as an assistant coach at UCLA in 1998 and for Loyola Marymount during the 2001 season.

In addition, he has coached at Santa Monica City College, Cross Roads High School, Santa Monica High School and Milken Community High School. He was also the Southern Region's Premier Division I coach in 1999-2000.

A 1993 graduate of UCLA, he lettered for the Bruins from 1989-91 and earned All-American honors there as a senior. He then went on to play professionally for Division I leagues in France and New Zealand and collected three scoring titles in as many seasons addition to three MVP trophies.

Earlier this decade, O'Brien coached and started for the Brisbane (Australia) Barracudas semi-professional water polo team and led them to a National Championship during his lone season there in 2003-04.

A native of Ireland, O'Brien was the leading scorer for his homeland's national team from 1990 to 2007. He is recognized as the first water polo player from Ireland to compete (and later coach) at DI level in the United States prior to becoming the Emerald Isle's first professional export.

Aside from his passion for water polo, O'Brien is a published author of the inspirational novel A Quest for Happiness.

He resides in Malibu with his wife Catherine and children Cheyenne and Maximus.
