No. 8 Pepperdine Sweeps Doubleheader at Season-Opening UCLA Invitational
Stephen Loomis and Colin Carroll both score five goals over the tournament.

WESTWOOD, Calif. - The No. 8-ranked Pepperdine men's water polo team defeated a pair of opponents at the UCLA Invitational on Saturday at the Spieker Aquatics Center. The Waves took care of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 13-5 and later in the day defeated La Verne 20-7. Seniors Colin Carroll and Stephen Loomis led the team with five goals apiece in the tournament.
In game one of the day the Waves (2-0) defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 13-5. After jumping out to a 5-2 lead in the first quarter, the Waves never looked back. Matthew DeTrane (Moraga, Calif./Diablo Valley College/Campolindo HS), Spencer Hamby (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS), Carroll (Fountain Valley, Calif./Mater Dei HS) and Wesley Sherburne (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar HS) all netted two goals apiece to lead the team.
Hamby started the scoring off for the Waves 19 seconds in, giving the Waves the early lead that they never relinquished. At the 4:50 mark in the first quarter, Sherburne scored his first collegiate goal to give the Waves a 3-2 lead. Goalkeeper Bence Valics (Eger, Hungary/Eszerbet Secondary) picked up where he left off in 2011, coming up with some big saves for a double-digit total of 13.
In game two against La Verne, Loomis (Moraga, Calif./Campolindo HS) led the Waves with an impressive four goal output, as Carroll and sophomore transfer Marko Madaras (Eger, Hungary/Golden West College) each tallied hat tricks in the 20-7 victory.
Madaras' first goal as a Wave came in the first quarter to give the Waves a 3-0 lead. Loomis added goals in the first and second quarters and came on strong with two to finish out the game in the fourth quarter. The Waves converted an impressive seven of eight 5-on-6 opportunities. For the second straight game, Valics again finished with a double-digit save total, this time with 12.
The Waves also competed in an exhibition scrimmage against UCLA, and will compete in two more scrimmages against MPSF competition on Sunday at the Speiker Aquatics Center.
