Waves Open 2013 Regular Season with Two Wins At UCLA Invitational

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Pepperdine opened the 2013 regular season with a pair of wins at the UCLA Invitational on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at the Spieker Aquatic Center. The Waves (2-0) posted a 14-8 victory against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and concluded play with a 26-4 triumph against La Verne.

Redshirt sophomore Luke Hewko (Santa Ana, Calif./Servite HS) paced Pepperdine offensively with 10 goals and established career-highs with five-goal showings against the Stags and Leopards. Freshman Christian Bridley (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara HS) impressed in his collegiate debut and recorded six goals, including four against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

Redshirt senior Danny White (Oxnard, Calif./Rio Mesa HS) recorded a first-half hat trick against the Leopards and added a pair against the Stags. All told, 15 of 17 Waves that entered the water scored at least once.

Goalkeeper Bence Valics (Eger, Hungary/Erzsebet Secondary) coordinated a strong defensive effort and recorded 13 saves, despite not playing in the second half against La Verne. Valics allowed just one goal in the third period against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and shutout La Verne in the second quarter.

UP NEXT FOR THE WAVES: Pepperdine plays a pair of exhibition matches tomorrow at UCSB. The Waves play the Gauchos at 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at the UCSB Pool. Pepperdine returns to regular season action when it takes on local archrival Loyola Marymount Saturday, September 14 in a Wells Fargo PCH Cup battle. Match time against the Lions is set for 12:00 p.m. at the Burns Center.

Pepperdine wrapped up its opening day with a decisive victory against La Verne. The Waves owned a halftime lead of 14-1 and Luke Hewko and Danny White each recorded first-half hat tricks. Pepperdine blanked the Leopards in the second and third period and scored 20 unanswered goals. Hewko finished with a match-high five goals, while freshman Christian Bridley added four in his second collegiate match. Bence Valics recorded six saves in the first half before giving way to Matthew Carter (Princeton, N.J./The Lawrenceville School) in the third period. Carter collected four saves in the second half.

Pepperdine played its 2013 regular season opener against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and seized a 14-8 victory Saturday afternoon. A pair of redshirts made big impacts for the Waves. Sophomore Luke Hewko led the way for the Waves, scoring a career-high five goals, while senior Danny White added a pair. Pepperdine's defense limited the Stags to just one goal in the third period. Christian Bridely scored a pair of goals in his collegiate debut. Bence Valics corralled seven saves.
