Freshmen Jake Schrimpf and Nick Cooper pace offense in victories over Occidental and Pomona-Pitzer.
Sept. 12, 2010
MALIBU, Calif. - - The No. 9 Pepperdine men's water polo team defeated all three of its opponents Sunday at the Inland Empire Tournament hosted by the University of La Verne. The Waves topped Concordia, 9-4, in game one, blew up Occidental in game two, 20-4, and torpedoed Pomona-Pitzer, 12-4, in the nightcap.
Pepperdine's three wins raised its overall season record to 4-1.
With the Waves scoring 40 goals Sunday, it was easy for everyone - regardless of class or experience - to make a significant contribution toward the overall scoring effort. For example, in the Occidental game, it was true freshman Jake Schrimpf (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) leading all Waves with five goals, while in the win over Pomona-Pitzer, it was rookie Nick Cooper (Clayton, Calif./De La Salle HS) directing the offense with four scores.
Also posting solid performances today were sophomore Danny White (Oxnard, Calif./Rio Mesa HS), redshirt juniors Travis Gough (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) and Alex Bergeson (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS), and transfers Brandon Picone (Morgan Hill, Calif./Valley Christian HS/West Valley Community College) and Tommy Briskey (Orinda, Calif./Miramonte HS/Cal).
White provided a pair of goals and assists vs. Concordia before scoring twice more in the rout of Pomona along with Gough and Briskey. Bergeson and Picone, meanwhile, scored three times each against Occidental.
Pepperdine played all four of its goalkeepers as well. Senior Bryce McLain (Costa Mesa, Calif./Newport Beach HS) made seven saves in game one. Veterans Matt Carter (Princeton, N.J./The Lawrenceville School) and Jonathan Flowers (Honolulu, Hawaii/Mid-Pacific Institute) each played a half vs. Occidental and combined for 11 stops. Freshman Bence Valics (Eger, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Secondary) saved nine shots vs. Pomona-Pitzer, including two taken inside the five-meter mark.
Official statistics from Sunday's victories will be made available late Monday morning.
Pepperdine's next set of games take place this coming weekend, Saturday and Sunday, at the University of California for the prestigious NorCal Tournament. Game times and opponents will be announced later this week.
