No. 8 Pepperdine Falls to No. 5 Stanford 11-6 in MPSF Action
Oct. 14, 2012
With the loss, the Waves fall to 8-6 overall and 1-1 in MPSF action. The Cardinal improves to 8-3 and 2-1 in league play.
DeTrane (Moraga, Calif./Diablo Valley CC) paced Pepperdine with two goals and an assist, followed by Loomis (Moraga, Calif./Campolido HS) who netted goals in the first and fourth quarters.
After trailing just 5-3 three at the half, the Cardinal surged forward in the third quarter with four goals. Although Pepperdine threatened to comeback with two quick goals in the fourth, Stanford cashed in on two insurance goals to maintain its lead.
Alex Bowen and Bret Bonanni both scored three goals to lead the Cardinal offense.
Although the Cardinal struck first on a Bowen goal less than a minute into the contest, Carroll answered for the Waves a little over a minute later. Loomis gave Pepperdine the go-ahead point on a power play goal at the 1:58 mark on the assist by Mike Tragitt (Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS). Bowen struck again, however, grabbing his own rebound to net the shot and end the first quarter in a 2-2 tie.
Tragitt was credited with the assist on both Pepperdine goals.
The Waves took the lead once again, going up 3-2 after Marko Madaras (Eger, Hungary/Golden West College) found Hamby for the goal.
Stanford found its offensive rhythm and, despite four saves out of Bence Valics (Eger, Hungary/Erzebet Secondary), the Cardinal netted four unanswered goals to take control of match.
In the fourth frame, Hamby drew a foul and DeTrane cashed in on the penalty shot with 7:20 left on the clock. Loomis deposited a goal a minute later, but Stanford put a stop to the comeback effort with goals courtesy of Travis Noll and Andrew LaForge.
Valics finished the day with eight saves, while the Cardinal’s goal keeper, Scott Platshon tallied seven
Pepperdine returns to the pool on Friday, Oct. 19 when they face UC Davis on the road at 6:30 p.m.
