No. 6 Waves Fall 16-15 to No. 5 UC Santa Barbara in Second Overtime Game of the Weekend
Three Waves scored hat tricks in the loss.

MALIBU, Calif.- The No. 6 Pepperdine men's water polo team suffered a heartbreaking 16-15 double overtime loss to No. 5 UC Santa Barbara today at the Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool. The Waves held onto the advantage through the first overtime, before three Gaucho goals in the final three minutes earned the visitors the win.
Pepperdine drops to 12-9 and 2-4 in MPSF, while UCSB improves to 14-7 overall and 2-2 in the league.
The Gauchos came out strong in the first quarter, as just 58 seconds has gone by before Lazar Komadinic found the back of the net. Two more UCSB goals were scored before the Waves could answer. Stephen Loomis(Moraga, Calif./Compolindo HS) put Pepperdine on the board with his first goal of the day, and 25th of the season, at the 3:01 mark. Picone brought the home team within one, before Milcovich scored the equalizer with 14 seconds left on the clock.
Luke Hewko (Santa Ana, Calif./Servite HS) nearly gave the Waves the lead with a last second shot at the buzzer, but the ball hit the crossbar.
Pepperdine found its offense in the second quarter, scoring four goals on eight shots. Hewko found the back of the net with 6:58 left on the clock on an assist from Nick Cooper (Clayton, Calif./De La Sale HS). The Waves took a 5-3 lead off an unassisted goal from Tragitt at the 4:14 mark, but the Gauchos pulled within one with 3:49 left in the quarter. Tragitt and Picone added one each to finish out the quarter for the Waves and gave them a 7-4 lead going into the break.
The Gauchos netted three goals in a row to open the third quarter to tie the game at 7-7. Milcovich scored the lone goal for the Waves in the period, his second of the game with just 59 seconds left. The Gauchos answered with a late goal of their own to tie the game up at 8-8 heading into the final period of regulation.
Through the first three minutes of play in the fourth quarter the Waves and Gauchos traded goals as the score pushed to 10-10 with five minutes left in regulation. Milcovich scored his third goal of the game with 4:09 left to go and the Waves pushed for another goal less than a minute later to take a 12-10 lead. With 1:05 left to go, the Gauchos scored two goals from Eric Van de Mortel and Matt Gronow to tie things up at 12-12. That score would hold on through the final whistle and the Waves were headed to their second overtime game of the weekend.
The Gauchos had the ball to open the first overtime and took advantage of that opportunity, taking the lead 11-10 off a goal by Derek Shoemaker. The Waves fought back and netted two goals from Cooper and Matthew DeTrane (Moraga, Calif./Campolindo HS/Diablo Valley College) to take a 14-13 lead into the final overtime period.
In the final three minutes, the Gaucho offense came alive, as they netted three goals to take the lead, 16-14. A late second goal by Hewko with four seconds left to play would not be enough for the Waves, as they fell 16-15.
The Waves return to action next week Saturday, Nov. 5 for a 1 p.m. MPSF match at USC.
