Men's Water Polo: No. 4 Waves Upset at No. 8 Long Beach
Pepperdine Hosts No.1 USC Sunday in Regular Season Finale
Nov. 8, 2012
LONG BEACH, Calif. – No. 4 Pepperdine has pulled off its share of upsets this season, but tonight the Waves fell victim to one as Long Beach State seized a 12-7 in MPSF action Thursday night at the Campus Pool. The Waves (11-9, 3-4 MPSF) trailed throughout as the 49ers (19-8, 2-4 MPSF) evened the regular season series at 1-1.
Marko Madaras (Eger, Hungary/Golden West College) was the only Wave to record more than one goal, with strikes in the second and fourth frames. Three 49ers recorded a pair of goals and nine different players scored for The Beach.
“Our inability to convert on our power play opportunities played a huge role in our loss tonight,” Pepperdine interim co-head coach Willo Rodriguez said. “We only scored two goals out of nine chances. That along with not being able to capitalize on our counterattacks allowed Long Beach State to get the win.”
LBSU opened with two unanswered goals and led 3-1 entering the second. Pepperdine closed to within one, at 3-2 on a goal from Madaras, but the 49ers went on a 6-2 run through the end of the third period for the win.
Long Beach State limited the Waves to single goals in the first and third period and took a commanding 6-3 halftime lead. The 49ers scored three goals in each period.
Bence Valics (Eger, Hungary) made 10 saves in the contest, five coming in the fourth quarter.
Pepperdine returns to action when it closes out the 2012 MPSF regular season Sunday, November 11 against No. 1 USC. Match time against the unbeaten Trojans is set for 1:00 p.m. at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool. The Waves will celebrate the careers of its seven-member senior class in a pre-match ceremony.
