No. 9 Waves Fall to No. 1 UCLA 9-6 in Regular Season Finale

MALIBU, Calif. - The No. 9 Pepperdine men's water polo team fell to top-ranked UCLA 9-6 in the regular-season finale. Andrew Milcovich commemorated his "Senior Day" with a goal and two assists to lead the Waves.

After being outscored 4-1 in the opening quarter, Pepperdine (12-10, 2-5 MPSF) went goal-for-goal with the Bruins (19-3, 5-1 MPSF) in the final three frames.

Spencer Hamby (Granite Bay, Calif./Granite Bay HS) and Danny White (Oxnard, Calif./Rio Mesa HS) both netted a pair of goals, while Matthew DeTrane (Moraga, Calif./Campolindo HS/Diablo Valley College) and Milcovich added one apiece.

UCLA relied on the offensive effort of Griffin White, who tallied five goals.

In the first quarter the Bruins took the lead after Bret Lathrope scored on a rebound shot. The visiting team would score twice more before Milcovich put the Waves on the board with 1:25 left in the quarter. Paul Reynolds scored his second goal of the quarter with 44 seconds left on the clock to give the Bruins a 4-1 lead at the break.

Both squads went five minutes into the second quarter before either team found the back of the net. The Bruins would score first, to push their lead to 5-1. White would score with 1:20 left in the quarter for the Waves off an assist from DeTrane to close the gap to three, 5-2. The Bruins were awarded a penalty shot with 39 seconds left that they would sink to put the score at 6-2. Finally with five seconds left in the quarter DeTrane would sink his second goal of the quarter and the score at the break was 6-3.

The Waves started off the third quarter with a score at the 7:03 mark as Milcovich threaded an excellent pass to Hamby in the middle who completed the play to cut into the deficit, 6-4. Both squads battled back and forth for the rest of the quarter until the Bruins broke through with 50 seconds left and the score going into the final quarter was 7-4.

The Bruins would start out the fourth quarter with two quick scores to extend their lead to 9-4 with 4:40 left in the quarter. At the 3:43 mark the Waves would put together a nice attack and White made a clean pass into Hamby down low and he connected on a quick turn and shoot to cut into the Bruins' lead, 9-5. White would finish off the quarter with a penalty shot with 11 second left to put the final score at 9-6.

Both Bence Valics(Eger, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Secondary) of Pepperdine and UCLA's Matt Rapacz finished with 10 saves apiece.

The Waves finished the regular season with an overall record of 12-11 and a record in MPSF play of 2-6.

Next up for the squad is the MPSF Tournament, to be played Nov. 25-27 at UCLA.
